Correspondence to Alma Mahler and Adolf Klarmann, 1945-1964.

In an often effusive and personal tone, Byrns records his thoughts about specific composers and works related to his performances as a conductor, both in California and on concert tours, and about his study and orchestrations of Gustav Mahler's symphonies. Letters in 1948 and 1949 pertain to Byrns's efforts in founding the Los Angeles Chamber-Symphony Society (assisted by Alma Mahler's advice) and the program of performances. Occasionally his letters contain musical notations. In 1945 two letters signed jointly by Harold and Helen Byrns (1 a condolence letter to Alma Mahler and 1 a letter to Adolf Klarmann) reflect upon the circumstances of Franz Werfel's death; they were visiting with Alma at the time that Werfel died.
